Folate Confusion? Why Active Folates Like Magnafolate® Make a Difference

When it comes to B vitamins, not all forms are created equal, especially folate

Folate is one of the most important B vitamins for energy, mood, and cellular repair, yet many people are unknowingly taking a form their bodies can’t use.

As a doctor, I see this often: patients taking generic multivitamins or “B-Complex” blends that contain synthetic folic acid, assuming it’s enough. But for a large portion of the population, it isn’t.

The Problem with Synthetic Folic Acid

Folic acid is the cheap, synthetic version of folate found in many supplements and fortified foods. It must go through several steps in the body to become active — the final and usable form being L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF).

The problem is, up to 40% of people have genetic variations (such as MTHFR mutations) that reduce their ability to convert folic acid into its active form. This can leave them functionally deficient, even if their blood levels appear normal.

Unmetabolised folic acid may also build up in the body over time, with emerging research suggesting it could interfere with natural folate metabolism.

Why Active Folates Like Magnafolate® Matter

Magnafolate® is a patented, stable form of L-5-MTHF — the bioidentical form of folate your body uses directly. It bypasses the need for conversion, making it ideal for:

  • Supporting healthy methylation

  • Managing mood and cognitive health

  • Reducing homocysteine

  • Promoting healthy pregnancy and hormone balance

  • Addressing fatigue and detoxification issues

Because it’s already in its active form, it’s safer and more effective, particularly for those with impaired methylation.

What We Use in Our Bio-B Complex

Our Bio-B Complex contains clinically tested, active folate in the form of Quatrefolic®, which is molecularly equivalent to Magnafolate®. We chose it because it’s well-tolerated, fast-acting, and doesn’t require conversion, just immediate support where your body needs it.

We also use methylcobalamin (not cyanocobalamin) for B12, along with the full spectrum of B vitamins in forms your body can absorb and utilise.

Doctor’s Insight

If you’ve ever taken a B-Complex and still felt tired, anxious, or foggy, the issue might not be the dose, but the form. Active folate can make all the difference, especially if your body struggles to process synthetic ingredients.

When it comes to B vitamins, quality really matters.
